Mont Saint Michel y un poquito de Paris

My friend, Alexis, and I. We met the morning of Friday October 12th in Paris, where she is studying, to take a bus to Mont Saint Michel and stay the night and most of the day Saturday. The bus ride was five hours, but worth it.

A little church that was free to explore.

Some views from our first walk around the island. We ate lunch since we arrived around 12:30pm. Little did we know that there was so much to explore on the island.

We took a tour of the abbey after lunch. The abbey is the main building at the top of the island. It was huge!! It appeared they had a lot of it blocked off as well. We were able to get in free with our student id cards so that was great. I love looking at these pictures know because we have been learning a lot about cathedrals and monasteries in my art history class and now I can recognize many of the architectural features by name and know their purpose.

A cute postcard I found but did not purchase. Later on I found a small tin with caramels that had the exact same image. I bought it.

Here are more pictures from our exploration of the island. I still think we were not able to see all of it. We would turn the corner and there was even more we had not seen. After this we went back to the coast to get settled into our hotel. After resting for a little bit we headed back to Mont Saint Michel.

We took our shoes off, rolled our pant legs up, and went for a walk across the clay “beach,” which is submerged during high tide. This was really cool. It was very windy and a little chilly but being able to stand where the ocean (English Channel) once covered a few hours before was an unforgettable experience. Also pictured is the backside of the island. It mostly shows the abbey.

That night we ate at a restaurant right next to the hotel where I had a “chicken burger” and by that I mean a grilled chicken sandwich. It was good though and nice to have a little taste of home.

Here is the end of high tide. In some previous pictures you can see the water was barely present here the previous day. After we checked out of the hotel Saturday morning we headed back to the island. We sat and read until all of sudden we heard some singing coming from a microphone down below.

We still have no idea what was going on here. There were people in the military, a band, color guard, and what seemed to be some very important people. It was a neat experience and the band was very good.

After growing tired of standing so long we decided to find something else to do. We planned on going on a prison tour but first stopped for ice cream.

Honestly, the tour was short, weird, disappointing, and definitely not worth the 9 euro we paid for it. 0/10 do not recommend.

A small cemetery we stumbled upon and more views of the island.

And lastly for Mont Saint Michel, some cute animal pillow cases I saw in a shop. We roamed around until it was time for us to board the bus. We used a company called Flixbus, it was a terrible experience and I will not ever travel with them again. Anyways, now for Paris!

This was taken Thursday night when I got into Paris. It does not at all do her justice but it was amazing getting to see her at night. Even if I was quite far away.

I stayed Saturday night as well. I got up a little earlier Sunday so I could walk to the Eiffel Tour. These are some pictures from my walk. NOT pictured: the HUNDREDS of people I had to fight against who were running in the Paris 20k that day. Oops.

She is soooo pretty!!!

Also, just a quick lil complaint. I am SIX FEET tall. Can ya girl just get a little bit of extra legroom on the plane without having to pay extra for it? It is not my fault I was born this way. Ok, rant over.

All in all this was such a great weekend and I loved getting to spend time with Alexis. I will be seeing her again this Friday when we meet in Oslo, Norway. She also blogs and wrote a post about our time at Mont Saint Michel. You can read about it here.

Thank you all for reading. I have not quite decided what my next blog will be about. I have lots of options, but I will keep you updated! 🙂
